Charlie - Korea - May 2009

Charlie was in Seoul, South Korea for a meeting in early May. One of his colleagues, an American living in Seoul, arranged for a group of them to go hiking in Bukhansan National Park. It's close to Seoul, and the subway line goes right to the park entrance. Below, a pretty bridge crosses the stream:

They passed several temples on the hike into the mountains. Below, a small temple surrounded by flowers.

Further up the mountain trail, a large bell covered by a beautiful pagoda like structure:

They passed interesting piles of rocks, large and small. Charlie said that hikers contribute to the building of these.

Carolyn's Mississippi Visit, April 2009

Carolyn visited in April and we had a really fun time. Spent a day in Memphis (Elmwood Cemetery, Bosco's Brew Pub, Dixon Gallery), made her teach a nuno-felting workshop for my fiber guild, explored Greenwood and the Mississippi Delta, visited friends, went to the Holly Springs Pilgrimage, and generally just wore ourselves out!!

Here are a few Memphis photos. Charlie & Carolyn in Elmwood Cemetery. All the photos in this post are from Elmwood Cemetery.

This pretty statue, below, watches over the memorial for Staff Sgt. John Bayard Snowden, Jr., who died in the Battle of the Bulge, Feb. 3, 1945, 15 days before his 31st birthday. He is buried in the American Military Cemetery in Hamm, Luxembourg.

Cemeteries are full of beautiful statuary, exquisitely carved monuments, and tender messages. The statue below ponders the passing of Etta Grigsby Partee, 1884-1911, and the back side of the monument reads:

Warm summer sun shine brightly here,
Warm southern wind blow gently here,
Green sod above lie lightly here,
Good night, Dear Heart, good night, good night.

Here is Carolyn with John Overton. Overton Park in Midtown Memphis must be named after him.

I don't think I have ever seen a swing in a cemetery before, but what a great idea! Someone wanted people to have fun when they came for a visit.
